Do you know how to knit or crochet and are looking for a way to use your talent?
Please consider our group that makes mats for the homeless out of shopping bags.
Don’t know how to knit or crochet but still looking for a way to help less fortunate?
We can use your help as well to make “plarn” a. k. a. plastic yarn. It takes about 750 shopping bags to complete an average-sized sleeping mat. We need help folding, cutting and stringing together shopping bags so those who work on knitting or crocheting can continue their work uninterrupted.
We meet during the fall and winter months, every Tuesday at 10 am, in one of the classrooms, for work, some companionship and occasional coffee and sweets.
Can’t make it to our meetings? There is still a way to help us and the environment at the same time. We will take your clean, used shopping bags off your hands so they won’t end up in the landfill or littering the streets. You can drop them off any day at the parish office.
Want to do a little more? You can flatten and stack them up which will make the job of folding and cutting easier and faster.
We all are called to do something for those in need. The homeless of our community appreciate these mats because they help battle the elements, they offer just enough to create a barrier between the ground and the body, to help retain body heat while sleeping.
So, please consider joining “Mats for Homeless” in any capacity you can. We will be happy to have you.
